Madam, - Louise Holden makes an excellent case for more publicly-run swimming pools in the Dublin area (Education Today, November 27th). However, I feel I need to make it clear that the closure of Rathmines Swimming Pool, which was built in 1977, is only temporary, to make way for bigger and better facilities.
Construction of a new pool will begin on this site in January 2008. It will be 25 metres by 12.5 metres with a moveable floor and boom wall, suitable for children and people with disabilities. It will also include a fitness centre, sports hall, creche and 46 apartments, including social and affordable housing.
We in Rathmines have been campaigning for years for these badly needed leisure facilities. The new centre will be run at affordable prices by Dublin City Council. - Yours, etc,
Cllr MARY FREEHILL,
Chair, South East
