TALKING ABOUT 1798

Sir, - 1998 marks the bi-centenary of a rebellion in Ireland. Of the many insurrections this one was unique, it united Catholic and Presbyterian in opposing civil and religious oppression. The revolution was short, bloody and ended in failure.

The Irish government has, in the past, been reluctant to recognise and appreciate the significance of 1798. Though local leaders were mostly clerical and Catholic the national leaders were Presbyterian, inspired by the French Revolution. Would it not be fitting to celebrate the events of 78 on July 12th - in tandem with those of the Orange Order? It would give both communities the opportunity to celebrate together. The suggestion is not new. Early Christians didn't ban existing pagan celebrations they merely substituted their own events and continued the bi-celebrations. It was a stroke of genius, the rest is history. - Yours, etc.,
