Sir, - I am writing to congratulate you on your paper's coverage of the Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race which finished in Dublin last week. The photographs captured the majesty of the Tall Ships and their most impressive line-up along Dublin's Quays. I must also congratulate the correspondents on their informative articles and especially convey my appreciation of the coverage received by the Argentine Frigate A.R.A. Libertad which was much enjoyed and appreciated.
The Cutty Sark Tall Ships' Race required much organisation and planning. Much appreciation must go to the steering committee of the Tall Ships Dublin, the Dublin Port authorities, the Garda, the harbour authorities and all who played such a significant part in its success. From my perspective, I particularly commend the invaluable work of the liaison officer for the A.R.A. Libertad at the naval headquarters of the Department of Defence for many months of advance planning and co-ordination.
I must convey my appreciation to the crowds of Irish people who arrived at Sir John Rogerson's Quay to celebrate the arrival of the A.R.A. Libertad along with the other ships. The Libertad has visited Ireland many times and has always enjoyed the "cead mile failte" extended to her by the Irish people.
For the first time, this August the A.R.A. Libertad spent a few days in Foxford, Co Mayo, prior to her visit to Dublin. Foxford is the birthplace of the founder of the Argentine Navy, Admiral William Brown. The Argentine officers and crew were able to pay homage to the "father" of the Argentine Navy. The bond between our two countries has always been strong. We believe that the events of these past days have allowed us the important opportunity of meeting and interacting with each other and have further strengthened the bond between our two countries.
Please accept my appreciation and the assurances of my highest consideration. - Yours, etc., Victor E. Beauge,
Ambassador of Argentina,
Dublin.
