Madam, - Noel Gorman (July 30th) complains about the Taoiseach's public support for the regularisation in law of gay unions, and what he called the lack of "popular knowledge" about this proposal.

Mr Gorman does not say whether he voted for Fianna Fáil in the recent general election, but if he did, he would have done well to familiarise himself with the full range of Fianna Fáil policies before approaching the ballot box. This was his solemn duty as a voting citizen of this Republic.

Fianna Fáil, like all the other mainstream political parties in the Dáil, have long been publicly in favour of legislating for gay civil unions, and they have made no secret of this fact. For various reasons - pending Supreme Court cases, Oireachtas committees due to report, etc - this has not yet happened, but it is to be hoped that the day is now not far off.

Neither the Taoiseach nor Fianna Fáil can be held to account for the ignorance of Mr Gorman or other voters. - Yours, etc,
