Sir, – Geoff Scargill (January 4th) suggests that those opposed to the household charge are ultimately guilty of moral bankruptcy and tending to anarchy. He says we cannot pick and choose. I would remind him that there are large numbers of people and companies – inanimate bodies operated by people within this State – who choose not to pay the appropriate income tax or corporation tax.

Only recently the Revenue was in the High Court defending its right on behalf of the taxpayers in this State to examine schemes that the pertinent individuals said that it had no legal right to do.
