Madam, – In relation to Ryanair’s assertion that the €10 air passenger tax is keeping a significant number of tourists from visiting Ireland (Business, September 23rd), I would suggest the Government call Michael O’Leary’s bluff on this issue and drop the tax on condition that Ryanair increase passenger numbers to an agreed level. If it fails to meet this target then the State levies a fine on Ryanair to make up the difference. This would ensure in the worst- case scenario that the tax-take from the airport tax would remain static. However, if Mr O’Leary comes good on his promise then the State gains extra from the increased Vat take from the tourists. – Yours, etc,
