TDs' criticism of Cardinal Brady

Madam, - Political developments get ever more surreal

Madam, - Political developments get ever more surreal. The separation of Church and State has now come under attack in the name of an irrational belief-system codenamed "the project" ("TDs criticise cardinal over failure to urge Yes on Lisbon", The Irish Times, November 6th).

Churchmen could be forgiven for feeling that they are going to be "damned if they do and damned if they don't", when it comes to speaking of issues arising in the political sphere.

When will this Lisbon craziness end? - Yours, etc,

FERGUS O'ROURKE, Callas, Berrings, Co Cork.

If Cardinal Brady had issued a strong statement denouncing the Lisbon Treaty, there would have been uproar on the benches of the Dáil. The various political parties represented on the Oireachtas Committee on Ireland's Future in Europe seem just to be trying to figure out who to blame for the referendum result and how to get a positive response future.

Is this the function of the committee? If it is, then taxpayers' money is being spent in trying to figure out how to undermine the decision of the taxpayers. - Yours, etc,
