Teachers' Pay Dispute

Sir, - I am not generally a supporter of this government and I strongly disagree with many of its policies. I also have some good friends who are secondary teachers. However, I feel I must reluctantly applaud the Government for its handling of the ASTI pay dispute.

It is clear that a capitulation to the ASTI's outrageous demands would quickly lead to the collapse of the partnership process. What union would remain involved in this partnership when it is clear that they would do better by leaving it? At a time when there is a serious risk of a major downturn in the US economy and a serious risk of our food industry being devastated by a foot-and-mouth outbreak here, social partnership is more important than ever. ASTI members would not, of course, not be affected by such developments and they should reflect on the privileged and secure position they hold in this society.

The government has offered the ASTI everything that teachers unions within the partnership process get. They cannot and must not offer any more. Therefore, negotiations at this point would be futile. It is now up to the ASTI to do the responsible thing - and maybe regain some respect from parents, students and the general public in the process. - Yours, etc.,
