Sir, - In response to the letter "Temple Bar Buildings" (March 1st) as archaeological consultants to Temple Bar Properties for the redevelopment project at Essex Quay, we would like the opportunity in your pages to clarify a number of points raised by Mr Murphy.
The archaeological excavation of Isolde's Tower was not used as a pretext for the removal of the buildings, which had full planning, permission the remains of the tower were discovered afterwards.
The building design and the display of the tower's remains in situ were the subject of long and detailed discussion with the planning authority and the Heritage Services, leading to agreement with, and direction from, both authorities.
The tower base, as discovered during the evacuations (Temple Bar Archaeology, Report No. 1) is displayed within the building. It will be seen from the pavement of Exchange Street Lower when the development is completed.
We invite interested members of the public to visit the area and view our current archaeological excavation in progress on Essex Street West (Smock Alley). This is, being undertaken on behalf of Temple Bar Properties on what was a vacant, open site. - Yours, etc.,
