Sir, - Surely there was a better way of showing our sympathy and solidarity with the American people than closing the country down for a day. Would not Sunday have been a more appropriate day for a day of mourning? Could not both the employers and employees have been asked to contribute a day's earnings or pay to the fund being set up for the victims?
Instead, we had Bertie Ahern behaving like a Roman emperor, declaring a public holiday to mark these tragic events, with the private sector employers footing the bill. America needs strong and decisive leadership at this time. So does Ireland. - Yours, etc.,
T. Michael Wallace, Ashbrook Park, Ennis Road, Limerick.
