Sir, - Once again the pages of The Irish Times have been used by a professional hand-wringer to disseminate ludicrous, illogical, PC nonsense. I refer to Roger Cole's article of September 26th. Just as in 1991, when Shannon Airport was used by US planes to refuel during the Gulf War, we will have no responsibility for casualties inflicted by the US. That blame can be laid solely at the door of the Afghan Taliban government which is more concerned with depriving women of education and ensuring that all men grow beards than with safeguarding or even feeding its own people.

Mr Cole surely realises that in war food is a weapon of which the enemy must be deprived, as surely as he must be deprived of ammunition. When the war is over and the Afghan people liberated, the planes can carry bread to Afghanistan. - Yours, etc.,

Michael Grady, Clonmel, Co Tipperary.
