A chara, - Reading Sinead McEneaney's letter from Ann Arbor (September 25th), I was shocked! As one who works and lived in Ann Arbor, I believe I too am capable of observing the mood of the United States.

Firstly, there were anti-war protests in the "Diag", as there were protests in, I believe, eight other universities in the United States. But to say this conveys the mood of the American People is ridiculous. The University of Michigan is famous for liberal opinions - and to observe actions on a campus of 45,000 students in a city of a quarter of a million and then come to a conclusion about a country of 280 million is ludicrous. South-eastern Michigan does have the largest Arab population outside the Middle East and there are other rallies scheduled to protest, not at the forthcoming war, but at racial attacks on this community

The view of the American people, in my opinion, is that they don't want war but they're not backing away from this one, which they believe is inevitable.
