Sir, - Fianna Fail has referred the abortion issue to an expert committee and awaits its report. Pro lifers won't be holding their breath. They will recall that before the Divorce Referendum, FF commissioned an expert report on its effects from Professor Patricia Casey.
However, when the report arrived, those comments in it which did not agree with FF's pro divorce stance were simply tippexed out. Presumably the same fate awaits the present report. It would now appear that there is all party consensus in the Dail to legalise abortion in so called "hard cases" which, as everybody knows, leads ultimately to abortion on demand.
I would suggest that pro life members of such parties must seriously consider whether they can continue to support parties whose policies are at best equivocal, if not downright hostile to the pro life cause.
