Sir, - The people who begrudge the GAA its £20 million and complain that soccer in Ireland is under-funded have got it wrong.
Consider the money spent on English Premiership jerseys, shorts, socks etc. Soccer in Ireland would be far better off if this money was directed to local clubs and not to English Premiership clubs via the local sports shop.
Soccer in Britain is partly funded by the people who buy these clothes at the expense of the game in Ireland.
Congratulations to Mr McCreevy on his decision to give the GAA £20 million. It is important to recognise the great achievements of this indigenous institution. - Yours, etc.,
