Madam, - Thank goodness Croke Park is not being thrown open to our two major international sports. Can you imagine the embarrassment if the fiasco on St Patrick's Day were to be repeated at an international soccer or rugby match? The IRB or FIFA would probably ban future competitive games at a venue that could not even cater adequately for 30,000 fans, and caused families with tickets to drive back to Cork and Antrim without gaining entry to see their local teams.
GAA supporters don't seem to mind this treatment; they've been putting up with it since the dangerous crushes at the Canal End in the 1970s. And since the games in Croker are only between Irish sides, they can be run under the time-worn motto, "It'll do". - Yours etc.,
ÁINNLE O'NEILL, Osprey Drive, Templeogue, Dublin 6W.
