Madam, - The fuss over the name of a certain traffic-choked, overpriced West Kerry tourist town is sadly predictable ("Minister insists on Irish version of Dingle", May 20th).
I have recently visited the Basque country and I'm off to Brittany shortly. Both places have their own local names (for example, the resort city of "San Sebastian" is only ever called Donostia by the Basque locals). For local councillors in West Kerry to suggest that tourists will be confused is frankly insulting.
A change of name is unlikely to keep people away from Dingle. High prices, indifferent food and seemingly unregulated bungalow developments are far more likely to deter foreign visitors.
Irish tourism is struggling to compete in a crowded market. Pride in your own unique culture should be your chief selling point. The more "English" Kerry becomes, the less likely visitors will be to visit it. - Yours, etc,
