THE GENDER OF GOD

EDWARD COWAN,

EDWARD COWAN,

Sir, - I read with interest Angela Hanley's Rite and Reason contribution of July 16th and have to admit it made me think - but not, perhaps, in the way intended.

One word really struck home and made me wonder what exactly the new Reformation she spoke of would entail. I quote: "God's spirit moves in mysterious ways her wonders to perform" (the italics are mine).

If God is female, as appears to be claimed, then was Jesus really the Son of God? The conception of a son by two female entities causes me some disquiet, even if one is God.

Are the reports in the Gospels false? There are many instances given where Jesus refers to his "Father in heaven"; did He really say this and, if so, was He lying or just misled? If these instances are untrue, what else is misrepresented - the Resurrection, the Ascension? And so on ad infinitum.

Oh dear! I don't think theology is really my thing. - Yours, etc.,

EDWARD COWAN, Retreat Road, Athlone.
