Sir, - Mainland Brits have never expressed their view on the "Irish problem" via the ballot box. A referendum on a simple question - "Do you wish to see Northern Ireland returned to Eire?" might offer a clear signpost to a solution. Certainly, that right exists. It is a constitutional matter and we pay the bill for the pain. Ulster people should understand that they are not the only ones whose wishes must be taken into account.
Most people in Scotland, England and Wales do not feel a personal responsibility for the partition of Ireland in 1921, much less for what William of Orange did 300 years ago. The running sore from that wound can only be healed by the return of the last vestige of the British Empire to its rightful owner. Eire made whole as it always should have been. - Yours, etc.,
Portcawl, Wales.
