Sir, - Jason O'Mahony of the PDs (May 9th) is wrong to say that an underground Luas will connect with Iarnrod Éireann, wrong to say that it will go out to Dublin Airport and wrong to say that it will save valuable street space.
He is wrong because his party in Government has cancelled Luas. The fig leaf - a vague plan to go underground - has no budget and no timetable. It will never happen. Luas is more likely to fly through the air than go underground.
His party and Fianna Fail caved in to the companies that make big money from the motor industry. The Dubliners they betrayed will remember the dozens of brand new cars, covered in stickers, made available to Fianna Fail canvassers last June. Now, it's payback time.
Since Jason is in a betting mood, I'll give him a real bet. I will pay his Luas fares for the rest of his life if he will pay for my transport until Luas begins operating. - Yours, etc., William Campbell,
Usher's Island, Dublin 8.
