Sir, - Donal McMahon (October 11th) rightly highlights the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974.However, he fails to address the current status of Turkish Cypriots, many of whom perceive themselves as Cypriot first and Turkish second. Nevertheless, Turkish Cypriots are required to travel the world with Turkish passports, yet when in Turkey must apply for residence visas. Alternatively, they can apply for a Greek Cypriot passport in the knowledge that their application will prejudice their position at home.
Opposition to President Denktash - in the midst of his fourth successive five-year term - is strong. Alas, Denktash's influence in Ankara is stronger. The 1974 "intervention" resulted in the Turkish militarisation of Northern Cyprus and an influx of Turks in search of work has resulted in Turkish Cypriots becoming a minority twice over.
