Sir, - Carolyn Swift (October 22nd), certainly fell victim to Turkish propaganda on her recent holiday to Cyprus. She should also get her facts straight.
Archbishop Makarios, as the democratically-elected President of an independent Cyprus, was himself a victim of a coup carried out by the Greek military junta in power in Greece at that time. This then precipitated the horrific Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus.
To this day the Turkish army maintains a presence of 35,000 troops there and the state is recognised only by Turkey.
Of course Ms Swift loved Kyrenia - the place is beautiful. But I can't help wondering if she realised that 200,000 Greek Cypriots, constituting one third of the population of the island, were violently uprooted from their homes with no hope ever of returning and without any compensation, or if the hotel she stayed in was one of those stolen from my relatives in 1974. - Yours, etc.,
