Madam, - Jim Cantwell, in his article of February 11th, states that the Vatican City "would fit into Phoenix Park 16 times over".

I have seen the Phoenix Park referred to in this way before by non-Irish Joyce critics but am surprised to find it here. In Dublin the definite article is always used - "the Phoenix Park" or simply "the Park". "Phoenix Park", on the front of the Number 10 bus, is presumably an abbreviation. The correct name is surely The Phoenix Park. - Yours, etc.,
