Madam, - I am sure it was not intended, but Patsy McGarry's article on northern Presbyterians (Rite and Reason, May 15th) may have left some readers vague as to the distinction between Rev Ian Paisley and the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
Northern Ireland's First Minister is moderator of the Free Presbyterian Church of Ulster, a denomination which is very clear about its separation and distinction from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
Although history and politics have left their mark on the geographical location of Irish Presbyterians, let Irish Timesreaders be assured that The Presbyterian Church in Ireland is nationwide and has a no mean presence in this part of the island. However, rather than learning about them in our schools, why not drop into your nearest Presbyterian Church this Sunday? - Yours, etc,
STEPHEN LOCKINGTON, Irishtown, Mullingar, Co Westmeath.
Madam, - Patsy McGarry's article on Ulster Presbyterians was timely, thoughtful and constructive. What a pity that a photograph of members of the Independent Orange Order in full regalia was used to illustrate it. This juxtaposition undid much of the good work of the writer. - Yours, etc,
WILLIAM HANNA, Knock, Belfast.
