Sir, - It seems that Dublin 4 can never win. Now it's Dick Spring attacking us for not finding his presidential candidate to our liking and thereby damaging her electoral chances. He attributes positively uncanny powers of persuasion to the legal people in this region in particular!
Does it not occur to him that the real reason for the drop in support for his candidate could be that the public have more highlytuned antennae for cynical political acts than he gives them credit for - acts, for instance, such as the Labour Party attempting to use a very worthy charity as an emergency plaster-cast for its own inadequacies?
The Labour Party would do well to rediscover the basic intelligence that, although it may have stumbled on a few winners in the recent past, no number of mediacourting quick fixes makes up for the lack of a core philosophy and the grassroots which reflect it. - Yours, etc.,
Ballsbridge, Dublin 4.
