Sir, - It is obvious from the photograph in The Irish Times (October 16th) that Mary Banotti was having trouble removing her wellington boots. If she uses a tip which I got many years ago, she will have no further trouble. Put a large plastic bag - a supermarket carrier bag will do - over each foot and then step into the boots. To get out of the welly, stand on one leg, holding on to something to maintain balance, and lift the other leg. It will slide effortlessly out of the bag and boot. Repeat the process with the other leg and you are ready to put on your shoes.
Before learning this simple method, I, like countless other dedicated gardeners, spent fruitless minutes standing on the toe of one boot while trying to wriggle the other leg free.
This letter might seem frivolous - not so. Anything which poses a difficulty or delay to candidates on the campaign trail is to be avoided at all costs.
- Yours, etc.,
