Sir, - I am an Englishwoman resident in Ireland for over 50 years and have always been very happy living here. I take a keen interest in politics and have never failed to register my vote for an election.
Due to my advancing years I must have failed to remember that, as a British woman, I would not be able to vote in a presidential election. I therefore walked to the polling booth (because I knew there would be no parking space) - a fair little walk for someone who is elderly and suffers with an arthritic knee - only to be informed on my arrival that I could not vote.
Considering that two of the candidates for the Presidency came from the North of Ireland, which I have always understood is a part of the United Kingdom, I fail to understand why my vote is not allowed and take a rather indignant view of this paradoxical situation. - Yours, etc.,
Pembroke Park, Dublin 4.
