Madam, - Here in Wicklow the National Parks and Wildlife Services - a misnomer if ever there was one - has been chainsawing down acres of mature beech woodland. This is in Deputy's Pass Woods near Glenealy, an area designated a nature reserve.
A notice informs the public that "conifers and non-native broadleaves" are being felled to allow native Irish trees to grow.
I thought the debate about beech trees being non-native had been resolved in favour of that majestic species but obviously not for the managers of our national parks.
What was once a beautiful wood is being destroyed for the sake of "ethnic cleansing". It will take generations before Deputy's Pass woods recover.
After having been in this country for several hundred years, could we not issue beech trees a work permit to remain here a bit longer? - Yours, etc,
DANNY HASKINS, Oatlands, Wicklow.
