Sir, - Perhaps one of your sub-editors has lost the run of him or herself? How otherwise to account for the bold headline, Evidence does not support the theory of evolution, and the accompanying article by one Dr Tass(Opinion, July 18th).
The introductory paragraph is more suited to a narrowly denominational paper. The article is poorly argued and does not engage with any of the arguments in defence of the Theory of Evolution, and indeed appears ignorant of many of them. One example suffices; the discrepancy in the fossil record has been addressed by Niles Eldredge and Stephen J. Gould among others.
It is both surprising and to a certain degree, disappointing that such a poorly-argued article should appear in a quality daily broadsheet which has acquired a reputation for a balanced coverage of scientific issues. - Yours, etc.,
Dr Mike Scully, Bridgewater Quay, Islandbridge, Dublin 8.
