Sir, - Having read the replies to Dr Tassot's article on creation (July 18th), I would like to note the following.
The printing of features like this is to be welcomed despite Julian West's emotional reply (July 20th). Belief in special creation is not a scientific outpost. The list of eminent scientists who subscribe to it is as long as your arm.
For example, Professor Louis Bounoure, who rose to Director of Research at the French National Centre of Scientific Research, noted that "Evolution is a fairy-tale for grown ups. This theory has helped nothing in the progress of science. It is useless".
Let there be no illusion - the willingness of the parties for and against evolution to leap into print on the subject is not because of their fascination with the scientific debate on hand, it is because of the implications for the existence and role of God.
The sarcastic tone of letters like Mr West's suggests that one of the parties in this debate may have less peace of mind than the other.- Yours, etc.,
Jeremy Chipperfield, Rathfarnham, Dublin 14.
