Sir, - Molly O'Duffy (December 1st) is absolutely correct when she states that any cancellation of debt to Third World countries should be accompanied by measures which ensure that the benefits of debt cancellation are passed on to the people of these countries.
There are a number of Third World governments which might prefer to use their "savings" on debt repayment on the purchase of arms.
The countries which guarantee to use the money to benefit their own poor should of course be given maximum assistance and the Irish Government should be in the van of that movement. - Yours, etc., John O'Shea,
