Sir, - The writer of In Time's Eye (August 3rd) is concerned that the habitat of the corncrake is threatened by housing development in Athlone. Throughout Ireland the habitat of many birds is under threat due to the urbanisation of the countryside. In the countryside around Carlow town the habitat of the skylark is threatened by housing development. It is good to see people building fine houses and making the countryside viable but this should not be to the detriment of the indigenous wildlife.
Perhaps it is time for a countryside agency in this country, similar to that set up in Britain last April, to protect the countryside, not just designated areas and species under threat. Are we to wait until there are "six singing skylarks" left posing for an Irish Times photocall before they are cherished and protected?
I hope we will hear the lark in the clear air for many years to come. - Yours, etc.,
Bernadette Scott, Green Trees, Tinryland, Carlow.
