Madam, - Looking at the front page of last Friday's The Irish Times, I was struck that someone in the first world could be coming to terms with an enormous lottery win while someone in the Third World was struggling with a devastating African famine .
The answer to this inequality appears obvious - distribute a small percentage of the lottery prize fund to aid agencies in Africa. In this way, everyone who buys a ticket contributes to the famine appeal.
Most lottery winners admit that their windfall has been "life-changing", so why not make it "life-saving" as well?
For those, like me, who are still hoping for a lottery win, it is well to remember that if we have food in the fridge, a roof over our heads and a place to sleep, we are better off than 75 per cent of the people in this world.- Yours, etc,
