To school through the fees

A chara, - I refer to Ali Bracken's article "To School Through The Fees" (Weekend Review, September 3rd). In the academic year just gone, I repeated by Leaving Certificate in the Institute of Education, Leeson Street. Without doubt this was the best decision I and my parents have made for my education thus far.

With this in mind, I find Jim Jackman's statement that such schools "do not take a holistic approach to education" disparaging and simply untrue. During my time at the Institute I, like other students, was motivated, encouraged and provided with the necessary resources to achieve my full potential.

However, we were also educated in the importance of extra-curricular activities. For years Institute students have achieved many awards and distinctions in the sport, debating and the arts, as well as academics. Surely this is evidence of a holistic approach to education?

I will also add that this "for-profit organisation" did have allegiance to the community - its own. As John Morris stated, "We are a community within ourselves". There was a strong sense of community within the school, between staff and students. No problem too big or small, no teacher unwilling to help. This community atmosphere combined with a high standard of teaching is why the results speak for themselves - not because we the students walked around in a trance, mindlessly reciting soliloquies and formulas, as many would have you believe.

Finally, what particularly incensed me was John Mac Gabhann's comment that, "Those in grinds schools might do well in their exams, but the nature of learning they undertake doesn't necessarily prepare them for the demands at third level". The Institute provided me with what my previous school did not - it fully prepared me for life as a third-level student.

I left it not only with more points than I would ever need but also with a positive attitude towards learning, excellent study skills and valuable life experience. - Is mise,
