Madam, - Your edition of May 25th reports that a French chef apologised in open court for making accusations of racism about the Irish. This is intolerable.
The correct procedure in cases like this is for the offender to slink into a deserted Dáil chamber unannounced and to utter a confused and mealy-mouthed formula of words. The bulk of the political and media establishment will then close ranks around the forgiven offender.
It's one of our little ways and it contributes to our high standing in the world and to the reputation of our diplomacy. - Yours, etc,
HUGO BRADY BROWN, Stratford on Slaney, Co Wicklow.
