Sir, – While not disputing the accuracy of Mattie Lennon's letter as published on March 26th, I might point out that my maternal grandmother was a "townie" from Clanbrassil Street while my maternal grandfather was a "culchie" from Harold's Cross at one stage being an altar boy at Mount Argus.
That said, my mother was born in Clanbrassil Street, baptised in Saint Kevin’s on the South Circular Road, yet, never having lived there, claimed she came from Harold’s Cross.
She can hardly have complained when, having married a man of Cork antecedents, (Fermoy and Clonakilty would you believe), her sons were brought up to believe they were Corkmen and, like her, never lived in the place.
One of these days, I must ask my children what they are!– Yours, etc,
GERALD MURPHY,
Dublin 16.
