Madam, - Anyone who lives south of the Merrion Gates in Co Dublin has had to endure serious traffic congestion for the past two weeks, as Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council undertakes major repairs along the Rock Road.
I welcome the improvements this work will bring to the locality. I do however, object to the council's attitude to the disruption. The suggestion that motorists should use the Stillorgan dual-carriageway has compounded the problem. Both major arterial routes into the city from the south are now clogged up constantly. Many people have contacted me in fury at the length of time they now have to spend getting to and from work.
This work is due to last an a whole year. In order to mitigate the misery for hard-pressed motorists, surely the council could organise the works to continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so that it might be over more quickly. With a bit of planning, drilling could be done during the day and quieter works left for night-time.
The introduction of a "contra-flow" system on the Stillorgan dual carriageway in line with morning and evening traffic flows would also be a positive measure; it is galling to sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic while the opposite half of the road is virtually empty. Providing a local network of feeder buses to deposit people at the Stillorgan bus corridor or the DART would also diminish the traffic. - Yours, etc,
FIONA O'MALLEY TD, Sandycove, Co Dublin.
