Sir, - I echo the sentiments of Ronnie Sheehan (April 5th) in his defence of the overseas trips taken by Irish politicians to mark St Patrick's Day celebrations throughout the world.

I would add that in addition to the economic benefits that accrue to Ireland, directly or indirectly, these visits also mean a lot to the many Irish who continue to live abroad. Call me naive, but I for one certainly do appreciate politicians taking time away from families, during what would otherwise be a holiday weekend, to visit people they don't even know.

Had the economic turnaround that Ireland has seen in recent years been achieved in a commercial enterprise, the management would likely have been rewarded with highly valuable share options or significant bonuses. Tribunals notwithstanding, I feel that Ireland is well served by its elected representatives, and indeed its civil servants. I believe that credit should be given as credit is now due.

As for those who continue to begrudge, in the media or elsewhere, I believe we all know what to do with them. - Yours, etc.,
