Tree-felling in Phoenix Park

Madam, - I recently attended the visitors' centre in the Phoenix Park. To my utter astonishment, I noted that up to five healthy evergreen trees had been cut down beside a perimeter wall. I counted the annular rings of one and stopped at 240.

When I inquired as to why the felling of such important trees was necessary, I was told that "their boughs would over hang a garden/floral show that will take place in the summer".

Surely this is a gross act of vandalism by the Office of Public Works, given the size of the park and this age of global warning. - Yours, etc,

FRANK FOLAN, Culmore Road, Dublin 20.
