Trials Of Rail Travel

Sir, - I am one of a group of nine people who commute to Dublin each weekday morning. Some of us have been doing so for the last 10 years. On Thursday, October 22nd, it took us at least three hours to get to our work; this necessitated travelling on one train followed by three buses.

Of late the service provided to us has been deteriorating to the extent that on a number of Monday mornings, the trains appear to be running late as a matter of course, culminating in the fiasco on October 22nd, when our train eventually totally broke down at Clonsilla, and we all arrived an hour to an hour-and-a-half late for work.

We have major communication problems in Enfield and Mullingar, where we are regularly informed that trains may be running late, or may not be running at all. How are we to get to work regularly, on time and on a consistent basis? If we cannot be given guarantees, we will have no alternative but to seek other means of transport. - Yours, etc., Ron Maguire,

Enfield,
