Madam, - A remarkable picture of a 77-year-old gentleman, namely Dr Mick Loftus, appeared in November 2nd's edition. At his revered age he had won four medals in the World Senior Games in Utah. To my mind such an achievement warranted front-page cover, however, thank you for letting us know that such stalwarts are with us. He is an inspiration to us all.

You may not have known that he also had a successful career as a footballer and was a member of Mayo's All-Ireland winning team 1951. He also refereed an All-Ireland final.

He was also more than likely responsible for saving many young lives, as he was totally opposed to alcohol being part of the celebratory aspects of cup winning at games.

As coroner for Co Mayo he most assuredly saw many sad results of the aftermath of exultant displays, which went horribly wrong in road accidents on the way home afterwards. - Yours, etc,
