Sir, - The recent decision to fine the Austrian consultants involved in designing the Dublin Port Tunnel shows once again that the residents of Marino, Fairview and Santry were correct in their opposition to the project. For years many of us have expressed concern about the safety of the new Austrian tunnelling method. We were dismissed as "cranks" by the senior officials in Dublin Corporation and by all the political parties.
The tunnel collapse in Heathrow Airport 1994 was "one of the worst civil engineering disasters in the UK in the last quarter century", according to the judge. Ordinary people have been vindicated. Surely it's time to think again about the port tunnel project. - Yours, etc., Finian McGrath,
Griffith Ave, Dublin 9.
