Madam, - Many thanks to Andrew Ramsey (December 21st) for keeping the subject of the expensive use of electricity to light the major streets of Dublin at the forefront of people's minds. If nothing else, his letter classing me among the "begrudgers" may make other readers review our opposing points of view.

It's no harm that as many people as possible think about how we should use a finite resource like oil or turf. Whenever we allocate these expensive and fast disappearing assets to one cause it means that some other cause is being deprived.

Personally, I'd rather we would put these assets to heat the homes of the elderly and the poor than have them lighting the streets which bargain hunters frequent after Christmas day has passed into history. - Yours, etc,
