Sir, - It could only happen in Ireland: Raheny to Dublin city centre via Howth on the DART. As I stood on a crowded southbound platform at Sutton Station last Monday morning I noticed there were almost as many people standing across on the northbound platform and wondered what was on in Howth that was attracting so many people at that hour of the morning. A northbound train arrived, about three-quarters full, and they got on.

I realised how smart these people were when the same train arrived back in Sutton, the second stop on the line, about 15 minutes later, going south, and there wasn't a seat to be had. Even some people who had boarded at Howth, the terminus, were standing.

Passengers from as far in as Raheny are getting on northbound trains, even though their eventual destination is the city centre, in order to avoid the congestion at morning rush hour.
