Madam, - Ronan Tynan has the right to criticise U2's tax arrangements (Letters, October 31st) but to say that Bono forfeited the right to be called an "anti-poverty" campaigner is going beyond the bounds of legitimate and/or constructive criticism and is directed at the wrong target.
Every person or corporation has the moral right to avail of any legal tax structure, including the use of offshore tax avoidance, which will reduce the amount of tax to be paid.
If some find tax exile scandalous they should direct their remarks to the Government and insist that the perceived loopholes be closed.
Mr Tynan's letter is a good working example of ad hominem criticism and is a remarkable exegetic comment on last Sunday's gospel story of the self-righteous Pharisee. - Yours, etc,
KEVIN HEALY, Hampstead Avenue,Glasnevin, Dublin 9.
