Sir, - As a recent graduate of UCD's Department of Music, I feel that prospective music students might get a rather negative impression of how music is taught there as a result of Victoria White's interview with the singer Karan Casey (The Irish Times, February 3rd). I can only assume that Ms Casey attended UCD under what is commonly referred to in the music department as the "old regime".
The current body of staff in the department are quite well equipped to teach "other kinds of music" and do so. UCC does not have a monopoly on ethnomusicology courses, and I hope that budding musicians will bear this in mind. - Yours, etc., Helen Toal,
