Up To Speed

Sir, - Our country's obsession with speed and the attempts by the Garda to curtail it is topical. Paradoxically, my problem is the lack of it. I am referring to some road users' propensity to travel at such slow speeds as to cause tailbacks on our over-used country roads.

Slow-moving vehicles such as tractors, JCB's, dumpers and - the arch-villain of the piece - the Sunday driver, contribute to a lot of agitation, frustration and delays on our roads. Should these drivers wish to continue at their own pace, could they demonstrate simple courtesy and pull over, allowing the more hard-pressed amongst us to reach our destinations on time?

In the United States, a road user whose speed results in a hold up of more than four vehicles can be cited as a moving violation. Perhaps therefore, it's time to introduce similar legislation so that we might be up to speed, as it were. - Yours, etc.,

Sally O'Brien
