Madam, - The US Supreme Court has ruled that the Ten Commandments may be displayed on government property (The Irish Times, June 28th), but that each case must be examined on its merits.
It has yet to rule on where exactly the commandments apply. Perhaps "Thou shalt not kill (except in Iraq)"? Or: "Thou shalt not bear false witness (except against Iraq)"?
If the judges are minded to argue for such exclusions, they might like to consider that the Almighty delivered his rulings on the matter a damn sight closer to Baghdad than to Washington.
Did He overlook Iraq in the drafting process? Or did He mean His commandments to have universal effect, I wonder? - Yours, etc,
