Madam, – Your Editorial on the menace of using mobile phones while driving was timely (September 27th). It’s getting worse, however many culprits are caught. It wouldn’t take a genius to realise that a hands-free phone is just as dangerous. It’s to do with the head rather than the hands.

The legislation needs to be amended to include both, and the charge upgraded to dangerous driving incurring a hefty fine and suspension of licence. – Yours, etc,
