Sir, - Societies do not die quickly, but are slowly chipped away by greed, indifference and self interest. Individual members become corrupted by wealth, self advancement and self interest as the concern for society slips from the concern of individuals.
However, every now and then, large chunks can be seen to fall from the edifice of normality, as another part of our innocence is lost.
The vicious and callous elimination of a journalist on a main road is just such an occasion. This act must now prove that a policy of benign containment is no longer adequate in dealing with organised crime.
We are at war, our society is under attack, and the means of war, constitutional or not, need to be employed to protect our society. Strong words of condemnation will but sound hollow if not followed by real action.
Rest in peace, Veronica. - Yours, etc.,
