Madam, - In his column of March 21st Vincent Browne makes some telling criticisms of our society and in particular some of its members. However, he condemns four political parties, two in power and two in opposition, either for being responsible for our multi-millionaire tax-dodgers or for being complacent about them. He then urges us to "vote them all out".
Under our electoral system the only way to vote parties out is to vote other parties in. Telling us to vote parties out is therefore empty rhetoric unless we should vote other parties in. If your columnist expects to be taken seriously he must do better than this.
Mr Browne occasionally identifies himself as having a leftist stance. However, he seems to adopt a curmudgeonly attitude towards all political parties whether they be right, left or centre. This, if it has any effect, can only reinforce the "they-are-all-the-same" cynicism which is now rampant among the less rational members of our electorate. What good it can do I cannot imagine. - Yours, etc,
TOM WILLIAMS, Goldenbridge Avenue, Dublin 8.
